In 1995, a collection of letters from Maleen of Adlkofen (1507 - 1578) were found in a box of her husband's papers. These notes--at times raunchy and sexual, at times furious, at times business-like, and at times sweet--characterize a marriage in the 16th century. These letters are strikingly modern and allow us an intimate glance into the life of a woman and of a couple that suffered many losses. Julie Shipland, who has worked on these documents since 1995, here provides a translation of a selection of letters that she finds most telling.
